It really doesn’t come as a big surprise, but Nick Cannon has officially filed for divorce from Mariah Carey . The papers were originally filed on December 12 after months of being a part.
According to TMZ , “ Nick Cannon beat Mariah Carey to the courthouse ” and has “quietly filed for divorce.”
The divorce is sure to be interesting, as their relationship had been contentious in the months leading up to the split. Carey and Cannon were spotted in August not wearing their wedding bands. According to People , “ the pair had been living apart for months .”
The two then officially announced their separation this past fall, which would explain some strange behavior of Mariah Carey. Apparently, divorce had been on her mind.
First, Mariah showed up late for the Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony. Carey appeared three hours late. According to People , Carey had been “engaged in a five-hour call with attorneys over not only property but the couple’s children.”
There was also an instance where Carey broke down during one of her performances at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The starlet had tears streaming down her face as she sang her hit song “Hero” on December 15.
Carey has seemingly been struggling with her husband of six years filing for divorce. The two had a whirlwind romance, dating for only six weeks before getting married in the Bahamas in 2008. The couple sparked rumors of divorce when they renewed their vows in Disneyland in May of 2013. The couple were able to hold on for a little bit longer, though.
Carey has been staying in the couple’s apartment in Manhattan with the couple’s two children, while Cannon has been living in hotels.
Despite filing for divorce, Cannon refuses to say anything negative about his ex. Cannon took to Twitter to say that despite the divorce, he will “never say anything bad about @MariahCarey.” He also asked that people have respect for his family during this time.

Both Carey and Cannon seem to be throwing themselves into their work in the midst of this divorce. Cannon is appearing on MTV2’s Wild N Out as well as hosting America’s Got Talent . Carey just signed a major deal with Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas to perform an 18-song set list of her greatest hits.
Despite filing for divorce, Cannon and Carey hope to “remain amicable” and keep the focus on their children.
