A New York City cop has shot and killed an armed 14-year old boy early Sunday morning. At 3 am uniformed officers on a Bronx street heard gunshots. Running down the street, they found an armed teen chasing another person.

CNN reports that the officers told the armed teenager to drop his gun , a 9mm handgun, and identified themselves as NYPD. When he did not comply, one of the officers fired at the boy. The armed suspect was killed after a single shot to the head.

The suspect has been identified as 14-year-old Shaaliver Douse. An investigation has been opened into the shooting. It is still unknown why an armed teenager was chasing another male in the street at 3 am on a New York City Bronx street.

The two police officers were taken to a hospital to treat tinnitus from the gunshot and trauma , reports Raw Story. Aged 26 and 27, both rookie cops joined the NYPD in January.

One Bronx resident told local news that the street the teen was shot in was in a very dangerous neighborhood. Because of this, he says he is glad there are police there and that they are doing a good job.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says that they have two surveillance videos showing an armed Douse. They also show that he was addressed by the two police officers and refused to lower his weapon. Kelly sympathized with the parents of the 14-year-old Douse, calling the incident “very troubling.”

New York has some of the strictest laws on gun ownership. Nowhere in the US, however, can a 14-year-old own a gun legally. A trace of Douse’s handgun showed that it was manufactured in Spain. Commissioner Kelly pointed out that most of the guns recovered by the NYPD come from out of state.

After New York City Police shot dead 14-year-old Douse in a Bronx street, many mysteries have been raised, including the identity of the man being chased by the teenager.
