Ed Boon, the creator of the video game franchise Mortal Kombat, has been teasing all kinds of hints about the possibility of a new game in the series. In a recent tweet, Boon gave another hint that Mortal Kombat 10 may be on the way, simply sending out the words “Number 9” repeated.

Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. https://t.co/e9Ub75lZGs

Fans are speculating about what this could mean. Game Informer seems to think the clue could suggest a countdown to the release of an announcement nine days away, which would be June 2. It could also be hinting at a countdown to the number 10, which would be the next number in the Mortal Kombat franchise. The tweet could also suggest a crossover game between Mortal Kombat and Streetfighter, or possibly Tekken.

According to Game Rant , the creator of the Mortal Kombat games has a knack for toying with fans and adding to the mystery. Certain characters in the Mortal Kombat games like Rain, Ermac and Reptile were all just myths and rumors among the fans before they were finally revealed. Boon took part in feeding those rumors to arouse suspicions. So, it’s likely that whatever Boon is hinting at will turn into something both real and exciting for fans of the Mortal Kombat universe.

The Mortal Kombat games haven’t seen a sequel in three years. And the most recent game was a mash-up between the Mortal Kombat universe and the DC comics universe, which resulted in some fan backlash over the toned-down violence of the game to accommodate for more family-friendly superheroes.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has earned a reputation as one of the most violent games in the world. The very first Mortal Kombat game forced the video game industry to develop a rating system to restrict kids of certain ages from purchasing gory games.

Another Game Informer article revealed that actor Kiefer Sutherland will be involved in an upcoming Mortal Kombat game.

Official news about the next Mortal Kombat installment will likely be revealed in the E3 video game convention this June. In the meantime, Boon will continue to slowly torture his followers with tidbits of mostly useless information. Anyone who has tried to get more information from him about a possible Mortal Kombat sequel has been met with more taunting vagueness.

RT @DanRyckert I’m pretty sure my favorite thing at E3 is going to be whatever the hell @noobde is up to. EB: Who said we’re up 2 something?
