With Nokia recently closing down its final manufacturing plant in Finland, it was only a matter of time before people in the area decided to vent their frustrations. That venting came in the form of a new world record at the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships.
The recycling awareness event was started several years ago and features three categories: the traditional over the shoulder style where the aim is to throw the phone as far as possible, the freestyle category where the aim is to provide nice aesthetics and creativity, and an “under 12 category.”
The new record of 101.46 meters was set by 18-year-old Ere Karjalainen who prepared for the event “mainly by drinking.”
While 101.46 meters is an impressive feat, the world record has been challenged by JIM Mobile’s Belgium Championships after contestant Chris Hughff threw his phone 102.68 meters, a record that was verified at the time by a laser rangefinder and video proof.
We’ll let the experts decided on who actually threw their mobile phone the furthest. In the meantime, I want to know who’s mobile phone continued to work after crashing to the ground.
Here’s the first video which showcases a slightly drunk Ere Karjalainen throwing his phone more than 300 feet. I have a feeling it would have went even further if he was dealing with the frustration provided by American cell phone service providers.
