Towson, MD – A school shooting in Maryland has led to the arrest of a student.

Robert Gladden Jr., a high school sophomore, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison as of Monday. Gladden opened fire in a high school cafeteria, injuring a student with Down syndrome. Daniel Borowy, 17, was wounded in the back with a shotgun on the first day of school on August 27. Borowy was out of school for two months healing from the school shooting .

As part of a deal with prosecutors, 15-year-old Robert Gladden Jr. pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder last week.

According to the Huffington Post , Attorney John Cox said Robert Gladden Jr. was sentenced for attempted homicide with a firearm at Perry Hall High School outside Baltimore last year.

No one else was hurt in the incident, as a second gunshot meant to subdue Robert Gladden Jr. struck the ceiling. After Gladden was removed for questioning, authorities found a suicide note in his pocket.

According to CBS News , Robert Gladden Jr. told the police:

“I didn’t have any one person that I was trying to kill. I just turned to the side and shot. About two months ago I was just going to kill myself, but then I realized it wouldn’t get the point across.”

Robert Gladden Jr.’s lawyer George Psoras mused:

“We don’t penalize people with mental illness, and now what we’re doing – we’re penalizing people with mental illness .”
