Washington is well on the way to being the first state to legalize recreational use of marijuana, if the latest polls are accurate. A survey released on Monday by Strategies 360 puts support for I-502 at a 54 to 38 percent lead.
A similar poll with a larger sampling pool gave the marijuana legalization amendment a 51 to 41 percent lead among all voters, according to the Seattle Times . The KCTS 9 Washington poll also had the cannabis issue leading 47 to 40 percent among likely voters.
Even though poll numbers indicate good news may be on the way for legalized marijuana supporters, the survey also indicates that only 34 percent of participants noted they strongly support I-502.
If approved, Washington’s I-502 would end marijuana prohibition and treat pot in the same manner as alcohol. Folks 21-and-over would be permitted to purchase cannabis at state licensed stores. All sales would be heavily taxed, but possibly still less expensive and dangerous than sneaking into a dark alley with the local drug dealer.
Washington would no longer impose criminal penalties for adults who possess up to one ounce of pot. Strict limits will still be imposed in relation to driving impairment. Support for the recreational marijuana amendment has reportedly gone mainstream in the state, and even garnered approval from two former US Attorneys and the state labor council.
A similar cannabis amendment on the ballot in Colorado is also leading in recent polls, but opposition is reportedly firming up as the election draws near. A poll in the Denver Post indicates voters favor the controlled and monitored sale of pot 48 to 43 percent.
