A man is currently in critical condition after allegedly jumping into a den at the Bronx Zoo and being attacked by a tiger.
The man lost his foot in the attack and suffered deep cuts in his back, reports NBC4 New York . He was taken to the Jacobi Hospital where is listed as critical. It is unknown how the man ended up in the tiger den, but sources tell the police that the man appears to have jumped inside intentionally. The man is believed to be in his 20s or 30s, according to law enforcement authorities. Emergency medical teams rushed to the scene, and the Zoo employees contained the tiger in a cage.
Animal mauling at zoos are rare, but when they do occur, the consequences are often deadly, reports NBC News .
According to the news site, a man was killed on Christmas Day in 2007 at the San Francisco Zoo when a 300-pound tiger escaped its cage. In 1985, a zookeeper was killed when she was attacked by two Siberian tigers at the Bronx Zoo while trying to clean up the animals’ cage.
Lastly, an 11-year-old boy was killed back in 1987 by a polar bear at the Prospect Park Zoo after climbing into the enclosure after the zoo had been closed.
