The Loch Ness Monster may have been found, and Google Street View is to thank.
The internet giant called on a team of experts to bring its Street View cameras to the famed lake in Scotland, where legend claims that the prehistoric creature lives somewhere below the water. The effort by Google turned up some beautiful pictures of the lake, both above and below the surface.
But the project may have turned up something much bigger — proof that the Loch Ness Monster really exists. Telegraph Travel found an image of a long and thin object just breaking the surface of the water, one that could have been Nessie itself.
“We were surprised by this sighting too,” a Google spokesperson told the outlet. “Is it a log, a bird or… the monster?!”
This is not the first time that the Loch Ness Monster was potentially spotted thanks to Google. Last year, a Loch Ness Monster enthusiast from Sweden spotted evidence of the creature while cruising the lake on Google Earth. The man, 52-year-old Bjarne Sj, spotted a long and thin object in the lake, then took a picture and entered it into the best Loch Ness Monster sighting of 2014 competition.
The picture was selected as one of the top five entries into the annual contest, earning Sj a $3,000 prize.
Sj said he was inspired to search for Loch Ness after reading about the creature online, then just happened to find what he believed was evidence on Google.
“The reason I found this image on Google Earth was that I was sitting one night at home reading about Nessie and Loch Ness on the internet and thought I would check to see if I could see something from above – and that proved to turn out well.”
The latest claim that the Loch Ness Monster has been found comes just before the 81st anniversary of the most famous picture of the creature. On April 21, 1934, the Daily Mail published the now-famous “Surgeon’s Photograph” of the Loch Ness Monster, which showed what appeared to be a body coming out of the water with a long neck and head. That picture was revealed to be a fake, however.
