Legend Of Korra Season 2 Resembling American Politics, Will Republic City Have A Government Shutdown?

Legend of Korra Season 2 is starting to resemble American and international politics in some ways.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr , Legend of Korra: Book 2 Spirits was, like the title suggested, supposed to be more about a spiritual journey.

The first part of the Legend of Korra series was gearing up for a big confrontation with the Equalist movement that potentially could have lasted through the second season when suddenly the conflict was wrapped up neatly and the bad guys sent packing. Unlike the serial progression of Aang’s journey, the second part of Korra’s adventure will focus on her spiritual and mental journey since she’s already mastered most of the bending skills.

Legend of Korra Season 2 is supposed to focus on the Spirit World but so far the story is caught up in more earthly, and political, matters. For example, Asami Sato keeps talking about falling revenue and how to conduct good business within Republic City. Korra’s approach to diplomacy is “my way or the highway” so, despite being from the water tribe, she tends to start more fires than those she puts out.

In various ways the action surrounding Republic City could be compared to the American civil war. The North and South Water Tribes are publicly demonstrating against each other and tensions are high, with some claiming acts of terrorism. Open war is in the air. And then you have the war-profiteers, with one character saying, “If you can’t make money during a war, you just can’t flat-out make money.”

Vulture.com explicitly compares Legend of Korra Season 2 to more modern day American politics :

“Is Korra our stand-in for President Obama, a community activist and dreamer driven up the ladder to the most important job in the world? Does that make the conflict in the Southern Water Tribe Syria or Egypt? But wait, is President Raiko actually Bill Clinton circa 1994, in the thick of the Bosnian War? If so, is General Iroh filling in for U.S. Army General Stanley McChrystal or another infamous military leader? Or will perhaps he’s affiliated with Asami’s version of Academi/Blackwater? And Varrick… our combination of Dick Cheney, the Koch Brothers, and Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels?”

All I have to say is that if Republic City suffers a government shutdown from budget issues then that might be an indication of where the writers are getting their ideas. Still, the Legend of Korra is unlikely to suffer a shutdown any time soon. The voice actors for Legend of Korra are already recording Book 4 so it’s possible this series could be much longer than the original Last Airbender series.

Are you happy with Legend of Korra Season 2: Book 2 Spirits so far?
