Katy Perry's music videos feature voguish styles that have remained iconic over generations. Her 2010 banger confectionery music video - California Gurls was avant-garde. But the fake spray tan became a living nightmare for the Dark Horse singer and her editing team since the shoot went from sun-kissed skin to a post-production ordeal.

Recalling the incident in a recent interview with Vogue, Perry revealed that as the shoot progressed her skin kept turning into deep orange due to the spray tan - “When you get a spray tan the day of the music video, your color changes gradually throughout the day—so I kept on getting oranger, and oranger, and oranger,” says Perry with a laugh. “We had to spend so much extra money on color-grading this music video.” She also shared the clip on her Instagram with a particular snippet of the interview with Vogue narrating the amusing anecdote.

She explains that a fake tan is required to be applied the night before and instead of following the standard procedure she applied it on the day of the shoot hence the color kept getting worse as the day progressed. The inconsistencies in the skin tone prompted plenty of post-production fixes in the music video to get Perry looking fabulous in one skin tone, but it came with a hefty price tag. "We had to spend so much extra money on color grading this music video," Perry laughed while regretting it. "Rarely do I get spray tans," Perry said. "And typically, you're supposed to get them the night before, right? Well, I just didn't have time, so I got them the day of my music video." Perry ended the short video with an advice for the younger generation - "Kids, just a little tip: fake tans, the night before."

The California Gurls' trendy outfit was styled by Johnny Wujek, Katy wore a cupcake bra with sparkly denim shorts. “These shorts are actually Diesel jeans that were cut and bedazzled," she told during her interview with Life in Looks with Vogue. The hit single was released in 2010 as part of her third studio album Teenage Dream with Perry in the lead. It also features the diva donning colorful confections while exploring a candy-like playland with cheeky Gummy Bears and her music collaborator Snoop Dogg.

According to a People report, the Grammy nominee revealed that she and costume designer Johnny Wujek "came up with this concept together." Wujek remains elated that the video marked "the beginning" of his collaborative journey with Katy after they first met more than 15 years ago. "It's all over the place, and I just love the creativity and being able to push it with her. She's one of a kind," Wujek exclaimed while discussing the trendsetting California Gurls style.
