Matthew McConaughey has a ton on his plate as of late. Filming just started for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar , which he plays the lead in. In addition, his Oscar hopeful film Dallas Buyers Club , sees him starring with Jared Leto, and Jennifer Garner. The film already is proving to be all the buzz for the Toronto International Film Festival.
Ready to roll that buzz into the days leading up to the festival, Focus Features has decided to release new stills of the stars, showcasing their period looks.
Dallas Buyers Club is about the AIDS crises, and takes place in 1986, which was the height of the mass media reporting of the virus. Taking place in Texas, Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey), is a foul-mouthed, boozing, womanizing heterosexual male who contracts HIV, and is living in denial when he is told that he has only 30 days to live. The doctor (Jennifer Garner) gives Woodruff his options, but none which the man is too happy with.
Instead of submitting himself to a medical trial, Woodruff steals the then-experimental drug AZT. On his journey for a cure, he meets and becomes friends with Rayon (Jared Leto), who is a troubled drag queen. Together the two sell treatments to the growing population that are infected with HIV and AIDS.
Dallas Buyers Club is sure to hit a lot of buttons, which has proven to be a plus for the Academy voters, depending on the year. Controversial subjects have garnered a lot of attention in years past, and it seems as though the studio isn’t afraid of pushing that envelope for this film.
For the role Matthew McConaughey lost a jarring 38 pounds to portray HIV patient Ron Woodruff. Jared Leto also lost a big chunk of weight as he lost 30 pounds from his original already lanky frame.
