Jane Fonda has put her New Mexico ranch on the market for $19.5 million. Presumably she was advised that this figure seems so much lower than $20 million!
Anyway, this is the figure announced by the Swan Land Company of Bozeman, Montana for Fonda’s estate known as the Forked Lightning Ranch, which is just north of Santa Fe.
Jane Fonda acquired the property in 2000, and then spent the next two years siting the home, called River House. The house occupies an area of some 9,600 square feet, and was prominently featured in the March edition of Architectural Digest.
Fonda described her home as “a sanctuary and a place of great joy and recreation for me and my family.” She added, “Many changes have occurred in my life since 2000 and I am no longer able to spend as much time on the Ranch as I once was. I feel the time has come to pass the Ranch on to a new custodian of this enchanted place.”
The ranch includes the Hacienda, a 2,125 square-foot guest home, a 3,400 square-foot log house, a 12-stall equestrian facility, and a gym.
Swan Land say that Jane Fonda has an extensive personal collection of antiques, artwork, rugs, furniture, and her literary collection at River House. She is willing sell them, together with the ranch equipment and machinery. It can’t be that she really needs the money, since her net worth is in the region of $120 million.
The ranch history is that it was originally created in 1925 when John “Tex” Austin purchased a series of parcels of land from the Pecos Pueblo Grant. It was eventually bought by Dallas oilman E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson, who married actress Greer Garson in 1949. Fonda, 76 (!), bought it after separating from former husband Ted Turner.
The main adobe home has six bedrooms and five bathrooms; the guest house has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a patio. There’s also a 3,409-square-foot, two-bedroom log house on the property. In addition, there is the obligatory swimming pool and hundreds of acres of breathtaking scenery.
Money aside, it must be very difficult for Jane Fonda to part company with such a beautiful home and all its memories.
