Jack White’s sold out Madison Square Garden show in New York City will be streamed live on the internet tonight at 9:00 EST. The concert will continue to stream back-to-back for 72 hours after its completion.

Jack White currently enjoys a status that many other musicians only dream about. A performer, producer and occasional actor, White is best known for his work as the frontman of The White Stripes. Since performing in The White Stripes with Meg White, however, Jack has been extremely successful in not only his solo efforts, but his collaborations with such musical greats as Loretta Lynn, Bob Dylan and Alicia Keys, and the work with his other bands – The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather.

The White Stripes were formed in 1997 and became a huge hit after a 2001 gig in London. Jack and bandmate Meg White became huge in England and their fame quickly spread across the Atlantic to the United States. In a music industry that only seems to support and rally around overnight, overly produced sensations that find fame in primetime network shows like American Idol and The Voice , Jack White’s methodology and musical work ethic echo something more natural with a little – or a lot – more street cred. Jack has shunned newer technologies in favor of analog (read: Old School) ways of recording records.

Over the span of his career to date, Jack White has won 8 Grammy Awards. Both of his solo albums have debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, and Rolling Stone ranked Jack at number 70 on its 2010’s list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”

In 2001, Jack White founded Third Man Records, his own recording label. However, Jack didn’t purchase a space to house the label until he moved to Nashville from Detroit in 2009. At the time, White explained why he started Third Man.

“For the longest time I did not want to have my own studio gear, mostly because with the White Stripes I wanted to have the constriction of going into a studio and having a set time of 10 days or two weeks to finish an album, and using whatever gear they happen to have there. After 10 to 15 years of recording like that I felt that it was finally time for me to have my own place to produce music, and have exactly what I want in there: the exact tape machines, the exact microphones, the exact amplifiers that I like, and so on.”

White’s Third Man Records not only produces albums for its artists, it also presses vinyl records for them using the slogan, “Your Turntable’s Not Dead.” Of vinyl, Jack White said, “We can’t afford to lose the feeling of cracking open a new record and looking at large artwork and having something you can hold in your hands.”

While seeming to shun the new in favor of the traditional, Jack White is no stranger to social media. His Twitter and Facebook pages for himself, his bands and his record label are all extremely active. And the streaming tonight of his Madison Square Garden show only emphasizes White’s understanding of the way the world works in the second decade of the 21st Century.
