ISIS is fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan as the Islamic terrorist group continues to gain ground in Afghanistan. As a result of trying to establish itself in the country, ISIS is engaged in a bitter and bloody battle for the supremacy of Afghanistan.
As reported in the Express UK , ISIS has begun recruiting from the various provinces in Afghanistan, and has so far recruited from about three quarters of the provinces. About 10 percent of the Taliban are said to be sympathizers to the Islamic terror group. According to a UN report released regarding ISIS, the terror group is continuing to grow in Afghanistan.
“The number of groups and individuals who are openly declaring either loyalty to or sympathy with ISIL continues to grow in a number of provinces in Afghanistan.”
The report also stated that ISIS regularly engages with the Afghan military forces, although fighting in the insurgency is rare. Several prominent al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders have joined ISIS, including Abdul Rauf Khadem, a former Taliban adviser to Mullah Omar. Khadem founded an ISIS branch in the Helmund and Farah provinces and regularly recruits those who have large sums of money.
As previously reported in Inquisitr , al-Qaeda declared war on ISIS, but would be willing to fight alongside them against the United States. al-Qaeda’s leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who replaced Osama Bin Laden as the leader of al-Qaeda, said in an audio message posted after the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that he would be willing to join forces with ISIS .
The Daily Star reported that ISIS is fighting the Taliban in the Nangarhar province, where they are battling the Taliban for control of the drug trade. According to the UN report, 70 ISIS fighters came from Iraq and Syria to form the core of the Islamic terrorist group in Afghanistan. Although Afghan security forces don’t believe there is an increased threat here, they are keeping an eye on the situation and consider it to be a potentially new threat.
The UN monitoring team said that ISIS is using propaganda tools written in English to increase their influence and compete with the Taliban. The Taliban is seen as a bulwark against the brutality of ISIS, and are considered a legitimate group fighting the terrorists in spite of their savagery during the 14 year insurgency.
