Instagram, the free photo sharing app that gives users the ability to apply one-click professional filters to their shots, just announced that it has surpassed the 5 million user mark.
Not bad for an application that officially launched only 8 short months ago.
Even more amazing however, is that there are now 1.25 million users for every one employee of the company. In case you’re horrible at math, that means Instagram – which added another 100k users this past weekend- currently has only 4 employees.
On top of the 5 million user mark, Instagram is rapidly approaching another big milestone: 100 million uploaded photos. With over 95 million images currently being hosted, and users collectively uploading close to 1 million pics per day, it should theoretically take less than one week to cross the 100 million mark.
If those figures don’t ‘wow’ you then chew on this for comparison. It took Flickr, an image hosting site housing more than 5 billion images, two years to hit the 100 million photo mark- again Instagram is only 8 months old.
Assuming that Instagram continues to grow at it’s current pace, it could easily reach 6 million users before the end of this month, and 10 million by the end of 2011.
So what does all this mean for the infant company that remarkably achieved such success solely on the iOS platform?
