Even though her previous passport was issued with an “F” gender marker signifying female, Aja, the queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race, recently applied for a replacement passport and had her documents reissued with a “M” gender marker, denoting male. She has vowed to sue the US for allegedly infringing on her rights to equal protection under the law and free expression.
The 31-year-old drag queen and rap artist came out as transgender in 2021. She is most remembered for her appearances on the third and tenth seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She said that she has since changed her records to reflect that, including a reissued passport that now identifies her as female. She never asked for her gender marker to be changed, so it was shocking when her passport came back with a male gender marker.
Her predicament is similar to previous instances involving trans celebrities this year, such as Hunter Schaeffer. Schaeffer asked for a new passport in February, but it was issued with a male gender marking. The United States’ anti-trans immigration laws forced trans artists, such Canadian singer Bells Larsen, to postpone whole tours, reports LGBTQ Nation.
Her concerns about the danger transgender persons suffer when compelled to out themselves were rejected, and the U.S. Department of State informed her that her gender marker had been corrected to “match their records.” This is in line with the policies of the present presidential administration that deny the gender identification of transgender people.
Aja says she was sent away with incorrect paperwork and was not given the chance to bring the issue up with departmental officials.
Danny Noriega aka Adore Delano, a contender on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” who claims to be trans, seethes that the Trump administration will keep the sex on his passport marked as “male.”

“Now I’m being forced to choose between my safety and my career — between flying with a passport that outs me at every checkpoint, or canceling tens of thousands of dollars in international work I’m booked for,” Aja typed in her post.
By claiming that the government had violated her First Amendment rights by deleting her identity and her Fourteenth Amendment rights by denying her equal protection, Aja informed her supporters that she would be taking legal action.
“This isn’t a clerical error. This is a federal fumble with my life in the crosshairs,” she continues, “And if they thought I’d carry this passport in silence? They forgot who the f**k I am. I’m not going down. I’m going public. I’m going legal. And I’m dragging the system with me!”
Aja the Queen posted on social media that, despite having all the correct documentation, she was still issued a passport with the gender marker ‘M’ to indicate male. ‘This isn’t a clerical error. This is a federal fumble with my life in the crosshairs,’ the star wrote.

Aja also came out as bisexual and self-identifying as nonbinary when she returned to the most current season of Drag Race All Stars. In 2018, Aja made the decision that she no longer wanted to be classified as a drag artist.
She discloses the financial toll that shedding this label took on her, which led to her losing her job and nearly going homeless. “It was bad,” she told Them. “In the middle of that, All Stars 6 happened, and Kylie Sonique Love won. Something clicked. I could be a trans woman and do drag. That could be me.”
