Illegal Immigration: New Poll Shows Hispanics And Democrats Oppose Obama Plan

Illegal immigration is not just a border state problem anymore. Approximately 60,000 illegal aliens have crossed the Texas border and been transported to all 50 states so far this year. About one-third of those who crossed from Mexico into the United States were unaccompanied children. President Barack Obama’s plan to deal with the immigration crisis is not surprisingly unpopular with Republicans, but according to a new political poll, the president’s plan is not scoring him any points with Hispanics and legal immigrants either.

The immigration poll showed that most likely voters do not support allowing President Obama “going it alone” if any changes to current laws are made. The poll conducted by Kellyanne Conway’s The Polling Company/Women Trend , also noted that the majority of those surveyed actually support the implementation of more stringent immigration policies. The deportation of thousands of illegal immigrant children is also supported by American voters, according to the poll.

Illegal Immigration Poll Result Excerpts

  • 75 percent want more enforcement of current immigration laws, including 63% of Hispanics and over 50% of Democrats. Although the administration and their media allies have pushed Obama’s deportation record, few Americans are buying the idea that Obama is enforcing immigration law strongly.
  • A majority name immigration as the most or one of the three most important issues to their vote this fall.
  • While President Obama is underwater in his job approval [57%-40%], an even greater margin [two-thirds] of Americans disapprove of his handling of immigration. This includes one of his key constituencies, Hispanics, who disapprove of his job performance on immigration by 55 to 39 percent.
  • Neither Republicans nor Democrats are viewed as doing a good job on immigration, a clear product of the GOP’s lack of coherent immigration message. That also means that neither party currently “owns” the issue. The current combination of children-at-the-border-crisis and an increasingly weakened President Obama is awakening a sleeping giant on an issue long eclipsed by the economy and healthcare.

When asked what should happen to the approximately 90,000 unaccompanied minors who have illegally entered the United States during the past several years, a total of 65 percent of those polled said the children should be deported. When asked if illegal immigrants in general should be granted amnesty or returned home, 70 percent of those surveyed answered that deportation was in order.

Those polled also said by a 58 percent margin, that immigration enforcement should be enhanced and President Obama’s power to grant legal status all by himself should be restricted. Those who identified themselves as liberals were the only group that favored the president working on his own to solve the problem, with 52 percent favoring such an option. Only 40 percent of the respondents who considered themselves Democrats supported the lone wolf approach to illegal immigration reform.
