The wrath of Hurricane Sandy has forced David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon to tape their shows without an audience, according to Entertainment Weekly . Although nobody was there to laugh at their jokes, it didn’t stop the pair from delivering some classic moments.
Jimmy Fallon opened his late night talk show by standing outside Rockefeller Center as the rain came pouring down. After stating that his guests Seth Meyers, Padma Lakshmi, and Robert Zemeckis would still be appearing on the show, Fallon revealed that the entire show would be taped without an audience. Without missing a beat, the former Saturday Night Live cast member launched into his opening monologue as usual, pausing briefly after each punchline to allow for laughter.
“Theater owners had to cancel all Broadway shows today Many performers were having trouble making it into the city. You could tell by that one show, ‘Blue Man Guy,’ ” Fallon joked.
According to E! News , David Letterman’s monologue wasn’t too far removed from his late night cohort. After jogging out in typical fashion, Letterman then took a seat behind his desk and began delivering the jokes he normally would have told standing up.
“We’re in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and we have no studio audience,” Letterman explained. “But we do have quite a show for you tonight. Thank you for joining us in the Ed Sullivan Shelter.”
Joining Letterman for his audience-free taping was Flight star Denzel Washington, who was decked out in a yellow raincoat. When asked if he’d ever experienced a storm as intense as Hurricane Sandy, Washington zinged, “Once, with Noah.”
Unfortunately for Jimmy Kimmel, his scheduled taping at the Brooklyn Academy of Music was ultimately cancelled despite the host’s best efforts to make it happen. “Though it pains us to do it, JKLfrom #Brooklyn tonight is cancelled,” Kimmel wrote on Twitter. “I’m disappointed too, but we want you to be safe.”
