‘Gravity’ Soars At Box Office For Second Week With Record $44.3 Million

Gravity, the space saga, soars at the box office for the second weekend in a row with a record $44.3 million.

The film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is breaking all kinds of records for fall openings, after debuting last weekend to the best October premiere with $55.3 million.

So far, the Alfonso Cuaron epic has earned a total of $123.4 million, passing the $100 million mark last week . At the worldwide box office, Gravity is doing well with $191.4 million despite a relatively weak opening in the international markets.

The film made $28 million internationally, after opening in 38 markets with a grand total of $68 million so far.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Gravity only slipped 21 percent from the previous week, which is a historic low for any movie opening at $55 million or higher.

Warner Bros. is pleased with the movie’s results, especially considering the time of the year in which the film opened.

“This indicates the ability to open a tentpole in October,” said Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman, who added Gravity has also attracted younger audiences, as well as those who rarely take a trip to the movies, proving the space program is still a topic of fascination with the public.

The film has had a strong showing with the 3D format, with IMAX alone making $9 million during the weekend with combined sales of $26.5 million. Gravity is the biggest second weekend gross in IMAX history.

Oscar winner Sandra Bullock gives one of the best performances of her career and many are expecting her to earn a nomination for her role as the stranded astronaut.

In a strong second place, Captain Phillips , the real-life story starring another household name, Tom Hanks, brought in $26 million, which is better than expected results.

However, Gravity continues to score record-breaking numbers for the month of October.
