Godzilla director Gareth Edwards swears that his approach to the iconic monster will be much more realistic than its predecessors, Digital Spy reports. The film — which was penned by The Expendables 2 writer David Callaham, The Dark Knight Rises scribe David Goyer, and The Seventh Son’s Max Borenstein — will reportedly have nothing to do with director Roland Emmerich’s ill-conceived 1998 adaptation.
During a recent interview with the folks at Total Film , Gareth Edwards discussed his excitement for the upcoming Godzilla reboot. If his enthusiasm is any indication of things to come, fans of the giant green monster should have plenty to cheer about once the film hits theaters.
“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him,” the director explained. “I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine, ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”
“I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity!” Edward said of his desire to perfect the look and feel of Godzilla. “But the reaction has been amazing, and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.”
If anyone can turn the Godzilla franchise around, then it’s certainly Garth Edwards. The director’s like-minded 2010 creature feature Monsters takes the giant monster concept and puts it in a believable setting. It would seem Edwards is keen on taking the same approach with Godzilla .
According to NME , British screenwriter Drew Pearce was recently brought on to deliver a rewrite of the script penned by Callagam, Goyer, and Borenstein. Since you can generally tell a film’s quality by the number of writers associated with its script — less is more, in case you were wondering — here’s hoping the addition of a new scribe doesn’t mean Godzilla’s latest adventure is already off to a shaky start.
