A gang of Colombian criminals were foiled in their attempts to rob a store when their getaway vehicle of choice ruined their chances by making too much noise.Perhaps choosing a donkey as the getaway vehicle wasn’t the smartest idea.

The trio’s 2 am robbery attempt was ruined when the donkey started braying and alerted police, cites The Telegraph . The group managed to steal rum, oil, rice, canned tuna, and sardines from a small shop in the north Caribbean town of Juan de Acosta. Allegedly, the group planned to load the goods onto 10-year-old Xavi, a donkey they had stolen about 12 hours before, and make a hasty escape.

Unfortunately, Xavi wanted nothing to do with a life of crime. The animal allegedly let out a series of noisy brays, which alerted nearby police. The robbers ran from the officers, but had to ditch the donkey loaded with the stolen goods.

Shop owner Fabio Orozco said: “They came through the roof to rob. They took rum, rice, everything.”

Xavi isn’t the first four-legged animal to be implicated in a crime. In 2008, Janos Jakab was caught trying to outrun border patrol police with a horse and cart. A spokesperson for the Romanian border police who nabbed Jakab noted: “In general smugglers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their methods of getting contraband across borders. But this case proved the exception to the rule.”

In case you’re wondering, all the loot was returned. And Xavi was reunited with his owner.
