When a lost dog walks nine days and 35 miles in order to find her way home you have to know it is loved. Georgia the dog endured predators, traffic, a torrential rainstorm, and Fourth of July fireworks in order to find her owners asleep in bed, and now they are sharing the amazing story.
In a related report by the Inquisitr , after a girl was killed by a jumping sturgeon fish , the family asked for help with the funeral and medical costs.
Owner Kris Anderson adopted Georgia from an animal rescue group when the dog was just 8-months-old. They enjoyed taking Georgia the dog on long walks at parks and preserves throughout California. Unfortunately, Georgia suffers from wanderlust and would often chase after rabbits and squirrels. Anderson says she even once had to climb the fence into the backyard of land owned by skateboarder Tony Hawk in order to retrieve her dog.
One day, Anderson was at the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, and she decided to let Georgia the dog off her leash to enjoy some freedom. Paul Kucharczyk, supervising park ranger for Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, explains why this is a bad idea.
“Most people who let their dogs off-leash feel their dog is a good dog, but there are so many reasons to keep them on leash. The coyotes are out there doing their job and we have other dog-walkers, horses, ticks and rattlesnakes, especially in the summer,” he said.
When Georgia the dog disappeared into the hills, the Anderson family spent hours looking for their lost dog. Although all hope seemed lost, they spent days making the 70-mile round trip in order to continue the search.
As it turns out, they did not need to search, since the dog walks nine days , only to show up out of the blue. Anderson says she was asleep in bed when Georgia run up and threw herself into her bed.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking ‘what?’ ‘How could this be?’ ‘Am I dreaming or is this really happening,’” said Anderson, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune .
Even though the dog walked nine days with easy access to food and water, veterinarian Luis Lizarraga, of Surfside Animal Hospital in Oceanside, says the dog was in remarkable shape despite the journey.
“I’ve heard of dogs doing things like this but I’ve never seen it before. She’s very lucky, absolutely,” said Lizarraga.
Needless to say, Kris Anderson says she is taking a vow that she will never let Georgia the dog off-leash in order to chase a rabbit.
