The Log Cabin Republicans claim a new Obamacare enrollment video promotes distorted stereotypes of gay men.
The Log Cabin Republicans represent gays who are politically conservative. The ad in question was sponsored by Out2Enroll, a coalition of organizations that seeks to inform the LGBT community about Obamacare, a.k.a. the Affordable Care Act.
Out2Enroll maintains that the video is simply “a holiday parody… which aims to bring awareness in the final week of health marketplace enrollment.”
Actual Obamacare enrollment has far underperformed projections, so various marketing efforts are underway targeting various demographic groups, including the much ridiculed “ pajama boy .” There is also some dispute over whether a consumer is actually “enrolled” (assuming the exchange website is functional) before he or she actually pays the first premium. Moreover, it’s not even clear at this point if the payment processing software is even working properly.
Today is the official deadline to sign up for Obamacare either on HealthCare.gov or a state exchange for those who want health insurance coverage to be effective by January 1. Consistent with other delays, waivers, and postponements surrounding the chaotic rollout of Obamacare, Bloomberg News is reporting that the deadline has actually been extended to tomorrow at midnight (i.e. Christmas Eve), but a White House spokesperson remarked that it would be “dangerous” to wait until tomorrow to try to buy insurance.
As far as the disputed Obamacare enrollment video is concerned, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo offered this assessment :
“This cynical ad betrays the depths Obamacare advocates will sink to in order to pad their pathetic enrollment numbers. As a self-proclaimed ‘fierce advocate’ of gay equality, President Obama would do well to distance himself from this nonsense and denounce it immediately. This ad is also an example of the left promoting harmful stereotypes that gay men are nothing more than sex-crazed lechers. If anyone on the right made such a comparison, liberals would be apoplectic. At a time when left-wing propagandists are decrying Duck Dynasty ‘s Phil Robertson for equating homosexuality with promiscuity and deviance, Out2Enroll and others should take a look in the mirror and ask if the truth is that they are the ones responsible for promoting such harmful stereotypes.”
