Harry Potter star Emma Watson just can’t wrap her mind around American men and is still adjusting to the fact that we’re quite a bit more forward than the blokes across the pond.
In an interview with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, Watson shared a bit regarding her difficulties in adjusting to men in the states, recalling her culture shock upon becoming a student at Brown University and being asked out on a date within days of arriving, which is not exactly something she’s used to after dating British men nor something her Harry Potter character Hermione Granger, having wasted her youth at Hogwarts for years while waiting for Ron to ask her out, is used to either.
“English guys are very well put together,” Watson told DeGeneres. “They dress really well and they are very well mannered, but they are also very restrained.”
Watson recalled her experience, detailing it further:
“Usually, in the whole courting situation, I’m used to being, first of all, ignored for the first two months of the ritual. And then, maybe they’ll acknowledge my presence. Then, they’ll probably be a little mean to me. And then, maybe, well, you know, whatever.”
Then, upon arriving at Brown:
“Then I arrive in America and I remember a few nights into Brown this guy just being like, ‘I like you. You’re great. Let’s go on a date. Let’s do it.’ I’m like, ‘I’m sorry, what just happened?’ This is, like, a huge culture shock for me.”
Watson also admits that she’s kind of turned off by American boys, thanks to our style:
“They’re very open and very straightforward, but they wear flip-flops and I don’t know if I like that.”
