Legendary singer/icon Elton John recently revealed in the latest issue of the Evening Standard that he never made amends with late rocker/icon David Bowie before he passed earlier last month. John and Bowie had fallen out with each other over 40 years ago after Bowie had labeled John “rock ‘n’ roll’s token queen” in a Rolling Stone interview.

John and Bowie’s rocky past was recently explained in the London-based Evening Standard magazine. “David [Bowie] and I were not the best of friends towards the end.” John stated that the two had started out as good friends and would frequent the clubs back in the day with fellow 1970s rock star Marc Bolan of T-Rex, who died in 1977. John also stated that Bowie had come across as “a bit snooty.”

“David [Bowie] and I were not the best of friends towards the end. We started out being really good friends. We used to hang out together with Marc Bolan, going to gay clubs, but I think we just drifted apart. He once called me ‘rock’n’roll’s token queen’ in an interview with Rolling Stone , which I thought was a bit snooty. He wasn’t my cup of tea’”

In regard to Bowie’s death, John stated that he had heard the news from husband David Furnish.

“I was in Los Angeles, asleep. It was 3am and the phone rang. It was David [Furnish, Elton’s partner of 23 years and now husband]. I immediately panicked, as when you get a phone call at three o’clock in the morning you think something is wrong. I thought of the kids, something has happened to the kids. And David said, ‘I thought I better let you know, David Bowie has died.’ And I was shocked… I couldn’t go back to sleep.”

John later stated that although he wasn’t his “cup of tea” he was rather impressed with how Bowie handled his mortality.

“no; I wasn’t his cup of tea. But the dignified way he handled his death, I mean, thank God. I knew he’d had a heart attack on stage in Berlin years ago, but not about the cancer. Everyone else take note of this: Bowie couldn’t have staged a better death. It was classy.”

Bowie’s son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, recently revealed on Wednesday that the late glam rocker was going to be a grandfather. The news was revealed to Bowie during Christmas. Jones, the only son from his first wife Angela Bowie, revealed on Twitter that his wife, photographer Rodene Ronquillo-Jones, was due to give birth to their first child in June. The tweet featured a card with an illustrated drawing of an unborn child holding a sign that said “I’m waiting.”

Ronquillo followed up Jones’ tweet by posting the following.

Shame on those of you who just thought I was really fat and didn’t say anything. HAHA. ? pic.twitter.com/OtTF2wPrPk
