Elk Grove, CA – Authorities say four people were killed and seven were injured Sunday in a tragic multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Northern California.
According to News10 , the deadly collision occurred at about 3:40 pm when a Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle traveling northbound on I-5 lost control, crossed the center divider and slammed head-on into two cars heading in the opposite direction.
Upon impact, two of the cars flipped and people were thrown from both vehicles. Police say four people died instantly, while emergency medical workers rushed seven others to local trauma centers.
“We utilized the jaws of life to get a patient out of one of the vehicles,” Chief Tracey Hansen, Cosumnes Fire Department, told CBS Sacramento .
The accident, which was under investigation at the time of this posting, resulted in the full closure of northbound I-5 and a considerable traffic tie-up, KRNV News 4 reported.
While there is still no word if drug or alcohol played a role in the collision, a spokesman from the California Highway Patrol revealed there was tire tread missing from the Expedition, which could mean a tire blew out, causing the vehicle to lose control.
“There was no witnesses saying that there was reckless driving, there’s no indication of being drunk, there’s no obvious indication of equipment failure, so that is why our investigation team is coming out to take a look at it,” said CHP Sgt. Bill Languemi.
