Being superstitious is quite a common attribute and the American President Donald Trump is no exception. Trump himself has accepted this fact about his character and he has clearly shown signs of a severely superstitious person.
For instance, Trump believes that throwing off salt over the shoulder after spilling salt drives away the bad luck. This is quite a common superstitious belief as it is thought that spilling salt invites bad luck. However, if the person who spilled the salt throws it over their shoulder, the bad luck or the devil can be driven away.
Trump was seen to be doing the same at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s fast food restaurant where he visited before the November 5 election results. Trump admitted to being a superstitious person and thus followed the common ritual that follows after spilling the salt.
Trump is also quite superstitious even in his professional life. According to Corey R. Lewandowski and David N. Bossie, both of whom worked for Trump, the President called into Fox and Friends every Monday as it was a ‘winning routine.’ Moreover, he also never allowed his staff to celebrate before a win or even prepare ahead of the winning actually taking place.

In their book Let Trump Be Trump, Corey R. Lewandowski and David N. Bossie mentioned, “We were never allowed to celebrate before a win was certain, and we always had to take our losses with grace. Anything else and you’d invite in some bad juju. It’s the reason come election night we didn’t have a victory speech – or a concession speech – written ahead of time.”
Trump is also superstitious regarding 1st April. As he said at the White House, “I would have done them on April 1st – believe it or not. I’m a little superstitious.” Tyla further reported, “He’s so superstitious about it, that he once pushed back a deadline to his ‘Liberation Day’ reciprocal tariff announcement to 2 April, as he was worried that hosting it on 1 April would coincide with April Fools Day and he would be accused of making a joke.”

Given the superstitious nature of Trump, he naturally sticks to his superstitions regarding his campaigns. During his 2019 presidential campaign against Joe Biden, Trump ended his campaign at Michigan’s Grand Rapids as he did in 2016 because he thought changing the locations might change the outcome of the election.
He maintained the same routine during 2020 as well, as Trump said they, “finished up there four years ago.” He further added that since he is a “little bit superstitious” he would end his campaign the same way. Another common superstition that Trump is seen to follow is touching an airplane’s body before boarding it. It might be a superstition that he follows to ensure a safe flight.
Trump therefore is just like a normal being when it comes to being superstitious and following through certain beliefs.
