A diver rescued a dolphin caught up in fishing line off the coast of Hawaii after the marine mammal appeared to ask for help.
The amazing incident happened January 11 when diver Keller Laros descended into the warm waters off of Hawaii. While on his dive, Laros found a dolphin stuck in fishing line that approached him and appeared to “ask” for help, the Daily Mail reported.
“The way he came right up and pushed himself into me there was no question this dolphin was there for help,” Laros said.
As soon as the dolphin swam up to him, Laros could see it was distressed. He told KITV that the mammal appeared to e inhibited by fishing line and a hook that was embedded in its pectoral fin.
The entangled dolphin then waited patiently while Laros worked it free from the fishing line.
Laros said:
“I was trying to unwrap it, I got the line fishing hook out of the pectoral fin. There was a line coming out of his mouth. But, the line wrapped around his pectoral fin was so tight and he had cuts both front and aft.
“I was worried if I tugged on it, it might hurt him more. I was able to cut the fishing line and unwrap it.”
After other divers joined the rescue to free the dolphin of the remaining fishing line, the animal swam away again.
