Diana Nyad live feeds are now set up to record the finish of the 64-year-old endurance swimmer’s journey from Havana, Cuba to Smathers Beach in Key West, Florida.
In the early morning hours, the navigator’s report had suggested that Nyad would reach landfall sometime between 4 and 6 PM EDT.
However, there are new reports that the swimmers is now less than two miles from shore. The new arrival time is estimated to be sometime between 2 and 4 PM. It could be sooner.
Diana Nyad has already broken the record for the longest swim from Cuba to Florida in these waters without a shark cage. She has made four previous attempts to make the swim, starting 35 years ago in 1978.
But bad weather and jellyfish have always conspired to stop her in the past.
Now triumph may be near for Diana Nyad. There are already reports of team members reaching the shore, so it could happen sooner than you think.
At 49 hours and 40 minutes into the swim, Nyad broke her silence and sent a message of thanks to all of her supporters:
“I am about to swim my last two miles in the ocean. This is a lifelong dream of mine and I’m very very glad to be with you. Some on the team are the most intimate friends of my life and some of you I’ve just met. But I’ll tell you something, you’re a special group. You pulled through; you are pros and have a great heart. So let’s get going so we can have a whopping party.
“Thank you, all of you, thank you for your generosity.”
She has also reportedly removed the special jellyfish suit and started primping a bit as she worries about how she’ll look under the spotlight.
