Anchor Carol Costello was incredibly professional while interviewing an anti-gay activist on CNN’s News Room , but hey… everyone has a breaking point, right?
Costello interviewed Bryan Fischer, a spokesman for the anti-gay American Family Association, about his “values-based” organization’s stance against the Southern Poverty Law Center’s anti-bullying diversity initiative, particularly the “Mix It Up a Lunch Day” event, reports Gawker . Opening the interview with quotes from Fischer’s 2010 “radio webcast” in which he said that “Hilter recruited homosexuals to make up his stormtroopers… Hilter discovered he could not get straight soldiers to be savage and brutal and vicious enough,” Costello gave Fischer a chance to explain his side of the story.
Fischer, who holds the title of “Director of Issues Analysis” for the nonprofit American Family Association, called homosexuality “toxic,” and compared it to “poisoned Halloween candy.” Costello becomes increasingly agitated and uncomfortable as the interview plods along, though for the most part, she keeps her cool.
MSN reports that Fischer finally went over the line when he compared “homosexuals” to “health risks,” causing Costello to abruptly end the interview. “That’s just not true,” Costello tells Fischer before cutting him off. “I’m going to end this interview now, sir, because that’s not true.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center has classified the American Family Association as a hate group, notes The Huffington Post .
