Clark Gregg, better known as Agent Phil Coulson in director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers , will reprise his role in the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television program. According to Film School Rejects , the actor has been tapped to return to the Marvel universe when the show hits airwaves at some point in the not-too-distance future. If you haven’t seen the aforementioned motion picture, then Gregg’s return may not seem too important.
Warning: Spoilers lay ahead, so proceed with extreme caution. Clark Gregg’s character supposedly bit the dust in The Avengers after being stabbed to death by the dastardly villain known as Loki. Although it’s currently unclear how Agent Coulson survived this seemingly fatal encounter, all will be revealed when the S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off hits the small screen.
According to Comic Book Resources , Joss Whedon discussed Clark Gregg’s return during his appearance at the New York Comic Con. As the director explains it, Agent Coulson was slated to appear in the television show from the get-go.
“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that,” the filmmaker explained. “From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality. He’s headlining the ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show and always was.”
In addition to his turn in this summer’s box office smash The Avengers , Clark Gregg has portrayed Agent Coulson in Thor and the Iron Man films. He also loaned his voice to Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man , The Hollywood Reporter explains.
