Cheese Ban: Seattle Suburb Shows Support For Seahawks By Banning Cheese Ahead Of Seahawks-Packers Game

The Seahawks are slated to face off with the Green Bay Packers Sunday in the NFC championship game, so what better way to support the hometown team than to ban cheese?

The city of Bainbridge Island, Washington, takes their football seriously – at least when it comes to their favorite team making it to the Super Bowl. In an executive order, the Seattle suburb’s city manger, Douglas Schulze, banned all “cheese possession and consumption” in City Hall Friday, according to CNN .

“On Sunday, January 18, 2015, the Seattle Seahawks opponent in the NFC Championship game will be the Green Bay Packers, aka Cheeseheads. Fans of the Green Bay Packers are frequently seen wearing obnoxious wedge-shaped foam hats painted yellow.”

According to Fox News , the Washington Dairy Products Commission pointed out that most of the cheese consumed in Washington state is made on the West Coast . However, Schulze says that the relationship between Packers fans and cheese was the reason for the ban.

Fortunately for cheese lovers, the ban was only for City Hall employees, and only on “Blue Friday,” but Schulze planned to take the ban seriously.

No cheese or even cheese-flavored products were allowed – including Cheetos and Cheez-Whiz.

“I’m going to arrive early and we’ll have some type of cheese grater or shredder available so if anybody brings in cheeses or cheese products, we’ll have to dispose of them,” Schulze told KOMO News .

Yahoo! News reports that the tongue-in-cheek ban also authorized employees to celebrate “Blue Friday.”

“All executive branch departments and divisions of the Local Government shall authorize employees to celebrate Blue Friday on each Friday prior to any games of the Seattle Seahawks by wearing Seahawks jerseys, logo gear, team colors and gathering at lunch or breaks for tailgating type foods and non-alcoholic beverages.”

The ban caught the attention of Packers fans 2,000 miles away, who weren’t too happy with having their signature food banned.

“Insane” and “demonic” were two words used to describe the ban by Wisconsinites, some of whom suggested banning Starbucks in response.

A Milwaukee radio station, though, may have done it best. The station retaliated by thumbing their nose at Seattle’s best import — music. In their “Say No To Seattle” campaign, the station knocked songs by groups such as Heart, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam off their playlist.
