Cat Poop Coffee Considered A Luxury In Indonesia

Cat poop coffee, while unappealing to the vast majority of human beings on the planet, is apparently all the rage in Indonesia, according to NPR . Officially, the beverage is called civet coffee, though the fact remains the same: the beans used to brew this bizarre concoction have been harvested from animal feces. That’s not the sort of thing most people want to think about when they’re enjoying their morning cup.

The aforementioned coffee gets its named from the Asian palm civet, which kind of looks like a cat with a very long nose. Once the little guy has properly consumed the coffee plant fruits, the beans are then removed from its poop and used to make a beverage that is enjoyed by folks with more money than they know how to spend.

How much can a person expect to pay for a cup of tasty cat poop coffee? According to Business Insider , four ounces of the good stuff is going to run you around $60. If you’re only in the market for a single cup of the brew, $10 is what you need to bring with you. That, of course, and a strong stomach.

If drinking coffee brewed from beans fished out of some cat-like creature’s poop doesn’t sound like something you’d like to spend your hard-earned money on, then perhaps you’d like to spring for coffee generated from the digestive system of an elephant. According to The Huffington Post , such a beverage exists, though it too will set you back a pretty penny.

The Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas currently offer customers Black Ivory Coffee, which sports beans that have been freshly plucked from a steaming pile of elephant dung. “Research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein. Since protein is one of the main factors responsible for bitterness in coffee, less protein means almost no bitterness,” the company stated in a press release. Unlike its feline competition, this coffee runs $50 a cup.

Are you brave enough to try cat poop coffee?
