Breadbox 64 is a new Twitter client with a distinct difference: it’s designed to run on the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128.
As you ponder the obvious question about how a Commodore 64 can have internet access to begin with, the setup is fairly simple. If you can remember a time before the internet was widespread, before the introduction of Mosaic and the world wide web, there was a vibrant BBS community, and Commodore’s had no problems networking with them via a dialup modem. What I didn’t know before today though is that add-on hardware development has continued for the system, and using an add-on via the Commodore’s cartridge system, you can actually hook one up to the internet using ethernet.
BreadBox 64 uses the embedded OS Contiki and a MMC Replay cartridge for the physical connection to the net. The client itself allows users to post status messages and view a friends timeline, with the timeline refreshing every two minutes.
