The first season of the hit A&E series Bates Motel is headed to DVD and Blu-ray this September.

Created by Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin, the “contemporary prequel” to director Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho tells the story of Norman Bates and his mother prior to the events in the film. Vera Farmiga portrays Norma, while Freddie Highmore tackles the role of Norman Bates.

According to the official press release, Universal Home Video is set to drop the first season of Bates Motel on DVD and Blu-ray this September. For a limited time, the sets will include collector cards which feature artwork from the series.

In addition to all 10 episodes, the home video release of the A&E drama will feature a handful of deleted scenes and featurette. In you were hoping for a slew of extras, then you’re probably going to walk away a little disappointed. However, all of the special features will be included on DVD and Blu-ray.

This one’s for the high-def junkies out there: The Blu-ray version of the set will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p video and feature 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio. In other words, the episodes are going to look pretty nice on your giant TV.

Bates Motel broke A&E records when it premiered on the network earlier this year. Approximately three million viewers tuned to the drama, including around 1.6 million folks between the ages of 18 and 49. Not surprisingly, A&E is moving forward with another season . New episodes are expected to arrive next year.

The series also generated substantial acclaim for star Vera Farmiga . Her portrayal of the very unstable Norma Bates recently earned her a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. The actress also received nods from the Television Critics Association Awards and the Pan-American Association of Film and Television Journalists Awards.

Do you plan to pick up Bates Motel season one when it arrives on DVD and Blu-ray this September? Are you looking forward to next season?
