The suspect in the nanny cam recorded attack on a mother who was assaulted in front of her 3-year-old has been arrested.
Police allege the suspect, believed to be 42-year-old Shawn Custis , kicked in the dead-bolted door of the Cypress Street home in Millburn, New Jersey, while a woman and her daughter watched cartoons inside their livingroom last Friday morning. The woman’s infant boy was upstairs asleep at the time of the home invasion, reports CBS New York .
The resident’s nanny cam recorded as the suspect burst into the home and beat the mother – tossing her about, punching and kicking her violently at least 16 times before pushing her down the basement stairs. Her 3-year-old also witnessed the attack, as she cowered on the sofa. The assault lasted for at least 10 minutes.
In hopes of not alarming the child more, the mother, according to reports, remained relatively quiet during the attack – knowing if she screamed the girl would too, which would put her daughter in further danger.
Police say the suspect took off with jewelry and valuables, including the woman’s wedding rings and her purse. Authorities believe Custis opted to burglarize that particular home because it appeared empty from the outside; no vehicle in the driveway.
Police withheld the names of the woman and child.
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment for a concussion. She presented with bruises along her face and body, had several chipped teeth, and required stitches.
Custis, who has a long criminal history of burglaries, was located in the lobby of a building on 10th Avenue in Inwood, where his girlfriend lives.
Custis faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, burglary, and child endangerment, reports the Huffington Post .
