AR-15 ammo may soon be flying off the shelves as quickly as .22 long bullets have for the past two years. President Obama appears to be poised to pen another executive order and mandate the ATF ban 5.56mm ammo.
The AR-15 semi-automatic rifle is the best-selling rifle in America. Its lightweight body, high-accuracy sights, and easy to operate functions make the AR-15 a favorite among both men and women, young and old, and experienced as well as novice shooters.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (commonly referred to as the ATF) revealed that the federal agency is going to propose a ban on AR-15 5.56mm ammo . The AR-15 ban will reportedly be “fast tracked.” News of the potential ammo ban will surely not only cause gun store shelves to empty quickly, but drive up the prices of the 5.56mm ammo as well. The nation’s leading sporting goods retailers, including companies like Cabela’s, are urging gun owners to contact Congress and stop the AR-15 ammo ban supported by President Obama.
Gun rights activists obviously do not support an AR-15 ammo ban by Obama executive order via the ATF. Banning the 5.56mm ammo will not prevent AR-15 rifle lovers from firing their weapon for target practice or using it to defend their homes – it will just make the process a bit more time consuming. Even a novice gunsmith with the proper molds could make AR-15 ammo in their garage. Selling or trading the possibly soon impossible to find ammo would likely begin occurring quickly among gun owners.
Republican Representative Bob Goodlatte, who is also the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to the ATF demanding to know the reasoning behind the sudden AR-15 ammo ban. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is working in conjunction with Representative Goodlatte, 30 fellow House members, and gun rights advocates to stop the AR-15 ammo ban. The NRA co-signed Goodlatte letter to the ATF. No response from the federal agency has been forthcoming.

None of the Newtown families involved in the Bushmaster lawsuit are commenting on the legal action, but Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is weighing in on the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle case. “Two years [have] passed and Congress has been complicit in the gun violence in this country by failing to act. And I share the frustration that may in part may underlie the reason for this legal redress,” Senator Blumenthal said.
