This is the week that Apple fans wait for every year: the week that Apple will pull back the curtain on the next edition of its bestselling iPhone. At a special media event this week, Apple is expected to show off the iPhone 6s, but already the talk is skipping ahead a year to talk about the iPhone 7. Wait, what?
Via Apple Insider comes news that well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks he’s already got the low-down on the next-next version of Apple’s iPhone, presumably named the iPhone 7. Kuo has a relatively solid record when it comes to predicting what the notoriously secretive Apple is getting up to, and Kuo says the skinny on the iPhone 7 is that Apple will make it just that… skinny.
According to Kuo’s most recent report, Apple’s iPhone 7 would come in between 6.0 and 6.5 millimeters thick. For comparison, the iPhone 6 is 6.9 millimeters thick. If Kuo is right, Apple would be making the iPhone 7 about as thick as the iPod Touch and the iPad Air 2.
News that Apple is going super-thin for next year’s iPhone might give some iPhone lovers pause given how the current iPhone’s thinness arguably led to last year’s Bendgate miniature fiasco. Apple, though, will reportedly solve the iPhone’s structural issues this year. The iPhone 6s will be able to pass the Bendgate stress test with more than twice the pressure, according to a report from 9to5Mac. The iPhone 7, presumably, would incorporate much of the same sort of materials when it comes to market, making bending a non-issue for next year’s iPhone.
There’s nothing else that’s “leaked” so far regarding the iPhone 7, but tech observers already think they know a ton about its predecessor, the iPhone 6s. Reportedly, Apple will be showing off a much more powerful iPhone this year, with the iPhone 6s packing an A9 processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and a Force Touch-enabled display. Apple might also introduce another color option for the iPhone 6s, allowing customers to buy it in Rose Gold in addition to the existing colors.
In addition to the expected iPhone 6s, Apple will likely show off a new version of its Apple TV set-top box. The new Apple TV is expected to feature a redesigned remote, as well as beefed up internals that will allow Apple to focus more heavily on games for its new device. The September 9 media event is also expected to see the introduction of a new, larger-screened iPad , dubbed the iPad Pro.
