American Idol featured an interesting confrontation last week between judge Harry Connick, Jr. and one of the show’s contestants, Quentin Alexander. During the live broadcast it was revealed that one of Alexander’s close friends, Joey Cook, was in the bottom two and would potentially go home. Alexander said it was “wack” that Cook and Rayvon Owen were facing elimination. Connick told Alexander that if he didn’t like what was happening, he could “go home.”
Now Us is reporting that Fox is replaying the argument in a new promo for Wednesday’s show and plans to remind viewers of what happened. The magazine confirmed that, due to strict rules about contestants fraternizing with judges, Alexander and Connick have not spoken since last week.
Alexander opened up to People after last week’s broadcast, and his comments implied he’s not happy with how Connick dealt with the situation. The comments were despite the fact that the two seemed to reach a truce on the show, with Quentin clarifying he meant no disrespect to the American Idol process itself and Connick admitting he had misunderstood.
“What kind of threw me off was how [Harry] said, ‘If you think it is wack, you can go home.’ If you think I’m being rude, to be disrespectful back isn’t right. Two wrongs don’t make a right. He said I could leave. I know I can leave. He can leave as well, but he chooses to be here because he loves to do what he’s doing. And that’s the same for me. Ryan just asked how I was feeling, and I was honest. I was upset.”
Cook, who was ultimately eliminated from the competition, told reporters after the show she supported Quentin. She said his actions showed the kind of person that he is.
“I pretty much just told [Quentin] what he did was beautiful, in my opinion, and it was the perfect representation of him. Quentin is a very emotional person. He’s very ‘all cards on the table.’ There is no sugar coating. He doesn’t hide his emotions. He’s honest. He’s a raw human being, and I think what happened last night was the perfect example of that and how emotional of a person he is.”
Wednesday night, the top 6 will perform “arena anthems,” and get two songs apiece. Quentin Alexander will tackle “Light My Fire” by the Doors and “Shake It Out” by Florence and the Machine.
American Idol airs at 8 p.m. on Fox.
