Adele has been named Entertainer Of The Year by the Associated Press.
137 members of the news service, which includes editors and broadcasters, submitted their votes, and it saw the London singer beat Taylor Swift and Psy in the poll.
Previous winners of the accolade, which celebrates the most influential person in entertainment and culture, have included Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga,Betty White and Tina Fey. Women have secured the award every time in its six year history, except for Stephen Colbert’s success.
David Panian, news editor for Michigan’s Daily Telegram noted, “It just seemed like you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs.”
Adele’s achievement is even more remarkable considering the fact that she didn’t release an album this year. She remained in the public consciousness though because she gave birth to her first child, a boy with her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, and also recorded the theme song to the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall , starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and Javier Bardem, which was directed by Sam Mendes.
The singer was also adorned with six Grammy and two Brit Awards.
Adele’s follow-up to her 21 album isn’t expected for several years though, according to her record label, XL Recordings. A spokesperson for the company recently told The New York Times, “The next Adele album may not come for some years, and it’s impossible to predict its likely sales. We therefore regard this year’s figures as exceptional.”
