After months of speculation, Adele has been confirmed as the singer of the new James Bond single for the upcoming film Skyfall . The track will also serve as the theme song for the film, traditionally playing over the opening credit sequence.
Big-name musicians have been long been brought in to provide an original title track for an upcoming Bond film. Adele’s Bond track follows “Another Way to Die” by Jack White and Alicia Keys for 2008’s Quantum of Solace . and Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” for 2006’s Casino Royale . Adele’s Bond track will mark her first new music since her multi-milllion selling second album 21 , released in January 2011, reports Music News .
Adele previously hinted that she would be involved in Skyfall , Daniel Craig’s third outing as the iconic secret agent, telling TV host Jonathan Ross, “I’m going back in the studio in November, fingers crossed. Well, this is actually a theme, that I’ve got to do. Wow, that’s really giving something away.” She was later spotted at Abbey Road studios with producer Paul Epworth at the same time that Skyfall’s soundtrack was being produced, furthering speculation that she’d be providing the title track.
Adele’s Bond track will also be called “Skyfall,” and allows the singer to add “Bond theme” to her resume. Being selected to provide a James Bond film theme has become something of a pop culture honor, as only the most accomplished and relevant musicians are asked to do so. Adele will share that honor with famous musicians such as Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Tina Turner, Tom Jones and Madonna.
On the rumor of Adele’s involvement with Skyfall , Bond theme alumnus and Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell told MTV News : “I can’t think of a better one. She’s pheonomenal and it’s nice, in a day and age where so many vocals are fixed by computers, that the biggest album of last year was somebody who sings for real.”
