A Swedish woman who was four-months pregnant died making what was to be her final base jump before giving up the extreme sport. Wioletta Roslan, 37, was jumping at Via Ferrata cliff, a popular spot in sport Stechelberg, Switzerland, according to the Daily Mail . Roslan’s boyfriend, Aleksander Domalewski, watched the tragedy unfold from the air; he had jumped from the rock formation at the same time as the mother of his unborn baby.
Halina Zaniewska-Pettersson, Wioletta’s mother, had this to say about the deadly accident:
“I was always terrified every time I knew she was doing the sport again. I kept expecting the worst. When she said that she was going to do one last jump while pregnant I begged her not to go. But she always wanted to carry on. I couldn’t force her not to do it, she was old enough to make up her own mind about things.”
Three people made successful base jumps from the Via Ferrate cliff before the pregnant woman took her final steps off the rock formation. Aleksander Domalewski tried to get Roslan’s parachute to open. He told her mother that when Wioletta realized she was not going to make it, she simply opened up her arms and waited for the impact. During a recent interview for Swiss Television, the pregnant extreme sports enthusiast noted her exhilaration when jumping.
Roslan had this to say about the sport which eventually ended her life:
“I only feel alive when I jump. I find normal life boring. I know that death always flies with me but we only have a certain amount of time on earth. When the sun goes down it’s game over whoever you are.”
She began jumping at age 19 and had successfully landed hundreds of times, according to The Sun . The Silver Wings Walking Team website notes the woman also appeared as a wing walker in airshows.
