Joel and Ethan Coen have signed on to pen the script for Angelina Jolie’s upcoming film project Unbroken.
Coming Soon reports that Jolie’s sophomore feature film as a director will be a direct adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 novel Unbroken. Jolie previously directed In the Land of Blood and Honey in 2011. The project was announced late last year, and the first draft of the script was penned by Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson.
But Jolie has drafted some surprising talent to help her work out the kinks in the film’s script. Acclaimed directors Joel and Ethan Coen ( No Country for Old Men , The Big Lebowski ) will be undertaking Unbroken ‘s second draft, according to The Hollywood Reporter .
The film will be co-financed and co-produced by Universal and Walden Media. Unbroken tells the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini who survived in a raft for 47 days after a plane crash in WWII. Zamperini and two other crewmen are caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner of war camp.
The novel was on top of the New York Times bestseller list for over 108 consecutive weeks, and spent 14 of those weeks at number one. It was also the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year Award in the category of Nonfiction.
The Coen brothers are also busy at work with their next feature film, Inside Llewyn Davis , which is set to hit the silver screen later in 2013. The film is carried by CBS films. The Coens also penned the script for the upcoming Michael Hoffman film Gambit , which will be released in 2013 through CBS as well.
