Injured Lakers star point guard Steve Nash is reportedly in the midst of an unusual custody fight with his ex-wife Alejandra Amarilla Nash.
According to TMZ , Nash, a longtime member of the Pheonix Suns who was acquired by the Lakers in a sign-and-trade deal over the summer , is fighting to keep his three kids from moving closer to him in California.
While Nash previously said one of the benefits of being with the Lakers would be that he could stay close to his children (in Arizona), he is now allegedly trying to stop his ex-wife from moving his brood to the Los Angeles area.
“I can’t comment on the information,” said Lance Spiegel, a high-profile divorce attorney hired by Nash’s ex. “I confirm that I have been retained by Alejandra, that I cannot comment because of the reasons described and that Alejandra is not available for comment.”
While Nash’s reasons for attempting to prevent his family’s move are unknown at this moment in time, TMZ speculates that a change of address to California might force the two-time MVP to pay substantially more child support than if the children stay in Arizona.
Nash’s representatives didn’t immediately return requests for comment.
Meanwhile, Nash told reporters he hopes to be back in the Lakers lineup in “10 days to two weeks.”
The 38-year-old has missed 15 games this year because of a fracture in his left fibula that he suffered in the second game of the season.
The 15-game absence is the longest Nash has been out since 1999.
