The Great Gatsby video game isn’t all that faithful to its source material (unless I missed the chapter in which Nick Carraway picks up floating gold coins and pummels his way through Gatsby’s mansion staff for his first meet with the reclusive millionaire socialite) but it sure is fun.
Presented in classic 8-bit Nintendo-esque graphical quality, the Great Gatsby video game follows the recent curious trend of unlikely fan-made video game adaptations of classic literary works.
It’s a pretty remarkable thing, though if you’ve been assigned Gatsby for school, we doubt you can skip reading the book and playing the game instead.
The game arrives just as Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby cleans up at the box office despite its mediocre reviews.
Many critics, including our own Niki Cruz , have lamented the film as overlong with too much attention paid to spectacle over performances and story.
I saw it yesterday and thought it was phenomenal, but you really ought to decide for yourself. Despite its 32 percent approval rating with professional critics over at Rotten Tomatoes, audiences at IMBd have granted the film a 7.5 out of 10.
Additionally, it has earned $51 million in just a few days of its $105 million budget back and is on track to be a box office success unless poor word of mouth sinks it.
