Coweta, OK – Two Oklahoma schools are on lockdown after a student committed suicide using a gun in a rest room. The suicide of the ninth-grader occurred at Coweta Intermediate School. Coweta High School was locked down as a precaution after the gun-related death.

The town is comprised of about 9.500 people. The Oklahoma town is approximately 25 miles southeast of Tulsa, the Detroit Free Press reports. Police officers received an emergency call to respond to Coweta Intermediate School around 8:35 am on Monday.

Law enforcement officers confirmed that shots were fired during a press conference after the incident, Newson6 reports. Superintendent Jeff Holmes did confirm that a ninth grade student committed suicide on the campus. Neither the name of the sex of the student has been released.

Initial reports after shots fired alert went out indicated that no one had been injured. Not long after the news of a gun-related incident at Coweta Intermediate School began circulating, details of the tragic suicide emerged. Both school and police officials noted that students at the school were not in any danger, the Examiner reports.

Coweta Police Lieutenant Donnie Krumsiek had this to say about the suicide at the Oklahoma school:

“If it wasn’t safe for the students to be in the school, the superintendent and school board would have shut the schools down.”

Although two Coweta schools are on lockdown, classes have reportedly resumed. Ninth grade students were moved in the high school gymnasium and can be signed out by parents. Superintendent Holmes sent out an automated alert to all district parents after the suicide at the school.
