It’s not easy having green.
Stephen Colbert announced the formation of a new political party Monday night on his show The Colbert Report . Taking an in-depth look at this country’s “new, vilified underclass,” the super-rich, Colbert revealed a brand new party meant to speak to the interests of this “disenfranchised” group, the P.I.T.Y. party.
“In the post-crash stock market recovery, the top 1% of earners only got 93% of the gains,” Colbert explained. “What happened to that other 7%, Mr. President? Did it go for birth control for the Muslim Brotherhood? Solyndra stock options for the Black Panthers? Where?”
The super-rich have decided to fight to get their 7% back. Organized under the leadership of a man named Lee Cooperman, the party will fight the pressure of politicians to pay a little bit more for their indulgences and expensive habit. According to an article in the New Yorker , Cooperman was inspired to go on the offensive after he heard a speech in which President Barack Obama said that the super-rich can still fly their private jets so long as they agree to pay a little bit more to do so, an expense, President Obama argued, that the super-rich can afford.
In Cooperman’s eyes, this constituted a “declaration of class warfare,” writing in a letter to President Obama:
“The divisive, polarizing tone of your rhetoric is cleaving a widening gulf, at this point as much visceral as philosophical, between the downtrodden and those best positioned to help them,” Cooperman wrote. “It is a gulf that is at once counterproductive and freighted with dangerous historical precedents.”
Cooperman also stated that President Obama is “not totally different” from a particular Nazi dictator.
