‘The Butterfly Effect’ Reboot Already In The Works

Do you need further proof that Hollywood is out of fresh ideas? The Ashton Kutcher flick The Butterfly Effect is already getting the reboot treatment.

Although the first entry in the series was released in 2004, apparently that’s long enough for someone to consider remaking the flick. Writer-director Eric Bress, who penned and helmed the original, has signed on to provide a script for the new movie.

In addition to Bress, a number of producers from The Butterfly Effect are returning for the reboot. No word yet on why anyone feels this is necessary.

The 2004 version casts Ashton Kutcher as Evan, a guy who has repressed a number of extremely bad memories. He soon discovers that he has the uncanny ability to alter the course of these events. However, Evan learns that even the smallest changes have significant effects on the future.

The Butterfly Effect was a considerable hit for New Line Cinema when it hit theaters back in 2004. The movie ended up generating a tidy $96 million during its run. Considering the movie’s budget was a modest $13 million, many considered the flick to be a success.

Unfortunately, the sequels weren’t nearly as memorable as Kutcher’s effort. Director John R. Leonetti’s 2006 direct-to-video sequel was a resounding disappointment. While Seth Grossman’s 2009 follow-up The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations was a little better, it still didn’t capture the magic of the original.

The Butterfly Effect isn’t the only flick that’s getting rebooted in the near future. The Inquisitr previously reported that the Jean-Claude Van Damme flicks Bloodsport and Kickboxer are both being remade. Considering Hollywood’s recent track record, this shouldn’t be altogether surprising.

Thanks to such notable 2013 flops as After Earth, R.I.P.D., and The Lone Ranger, moviegoers should expect more sequels, reboots, and remakes to invade theaters in the coming years. It’s definitely a sad state of affairs when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg claim they’re having trouble making movies.
