‘Beetlejuice’ Gets A Sequel? Winona Ryder Hints ‘Maybe’

Rumors of Beetlejuice sequel have been circling the gossip mill since the original was released all the way back in 1988. Now, it seems that Tim Burton is finally ready to dust off his eccentric comic horror and officially draft a second entry, according to one of the stars of the original film, Winona Ryder .

Beetlejuice was a critical and financial success when it came out, so a sequel was almost a given. Burton met with Johnathan Gems in 1990 to draft a script, then-titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian . If that doesn’t sound as awful to you as it does to us, consider this reflection from Gems after the project had fizzled: “Tim thought it would be funny to match the surfing backdrop of a beach movie with some sort of German Expressionism, because they’re totally wrong together.”

Film stars Michael Keaton and Geena Davis have also urged Burton to produce a sequel, but the closest thing we ever got was an animated series, notes MSN . Burton has long feigned interest in another Beetlejuice film, but usually answers rumors with, “I’d do it if the script is right.”

Enter Winona Ryder: The actress recently revealed that she’ll soon be in talks with Burton regarding a potential Beetlejuice sequel, telling Toronto International Film Festival reporters this:

“I heard (about the sequel) from journalists, that’s how I found out, but I’m seeing Tim next week, and I will let you know. I’m trying to think about how that would work. Obviously I’m not (the focal point), it’s got to be Michael (Keaton). So is it happening? It’s being written, but is it happening? Tim hasn’t confirmed it (officially) yet.”

Now to be fair, just in case your life depends on this Beetlejuice sequel, lot of times these rumored chats are just that. I don’t want to get your hopes up, it’s completely possible that Tim Burton and Winona Ryder will just get drunk and muse, “Hey, remember when we did Beetlejuice ? Those were good times, man.”

Still, sometimes these talks turn into something more. Like when Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino got together. And we got Inglourious Basterds .

Are you hoping for a Beetlejuice sequel?
