Mindy McCready’s ex-fiance Dean Cain is saddened by the country singer’s death, but admits he is not surprised by her suicide .
In a recent interview with People , Cain spoke out on McCready’s death for the first time, saying “I’m saddened to hear of her passing, but I’m not surprised.”
The 46-year-old actor became engaged to McCready in 1997, but the couple split the following year.
I can’t paint too pretty a picture,” Cain recalled. “She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren’t allowed to be good.” Cain said that he saw “red flags were everywhere” and ultimately moved to a hotel to escape her. “She was kind of poisonous and not somebody I was going to have in my life anymore – or anywhere around my son.”
Cain has a son with former Playboy Playmate Samantha Torres. He is currently single.
The day after Mindy McCready’s death, TODAY brought on Billy McKnight, the singer’s ex-boyfriend and father of her 6-year-old son, Zander. McKnight also said that he was saddened by McCready’s death (then thought to be a suicide, but not yet confirmed) but that it didn’t surprise him.
“Of course, I was around her when she attempted suicide twice, so I knew it was in her. I feel for her mother and her family and especially my son, but I can’t say that it shocked me,” he said.
